Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. For many people, this is the most romantic and much awaited day. A lot of couples may already be planning on how to spend this special day while there are others who already made special reservations at their favorite restaurants.

How does an Overseas Filipino Worker spend a Valentine’s Day, given that they are away from their family? Some of them still spend some time sending flowers and chocolates to their partners in the Philippines while there are others who are contented with video calling.

But if you are single, how can you find someone to call the love of your life? Other people’s answer: The internet.

Seeking Love Online

Chatting online, video calling, and sending messages via Facebook Messenger and email, a lot of Filipinos are lucky to find their life partner through the use of the internet. While others are happily married or in a relationship with the loved ones they meet online, there are also others who had devastating experiences online.

Take William Murphy as an example.

Dark Motive

In a Facebook story shared by OFW Kalingawan warning OFWs, a certain William Murphy is adding OFWs on Facebook. Once accepted, he will start striking conversations with women.

This person’s modus is to start courting you and getting your trust. Once you are completely head over heels, he will start asking or borrowing money. He will promise to return the amount twice.

There are also times when he will pretend to be a Marine staff and will call you to ask help because he was left by his shipmates and he doesn’t have money to pay for accommodation.

Since it is normal for Filipinos to trust and help other people, a lot of OFWs, particularly those from the Middle East, sent him money. The suspicious thing here is that he wants the money to be sent in Malaysia and under the name of different people.

Let this serve as a warning, mga Kababayan. Not all the people you meet online can be trusted.
