President Duterte confesses he “used to be gay”

President Rodrigo Duterte told the crowd in Japan that he “used to be gay” but he has been “cured” by beautiful women.

The President who is known for making flamboyant and intriguing expressions told his joke during his speech to the Filipino community while visiting Tokyo on Thursday, May 30.

He made such joke attempting to mock his top one critic Senator Antonio Trillanes IV whom he calls gay.  Duterte said he himself also felt “a little gay” while married to his ex-wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman.

The following excerpts are from Rappler:

It began with Duterte poking fun at his archcritic Senator Antonio Trillanes IV. He said someone gay had told him that based on the senator’s movements, Trillanes is gay. Earlier in his speech, Duterte had “confessed” that he too used to be gay.

“Sabi ko, ‘Totoo ka?’ Sabi niya, ‘Magtanong ka kahit sinong bakla at makita ‘yan gumalaw, sabihin niyan bakla talaga.’ Kaya pala. Mabuti na lang pareho kami ni Trillanes. Pero nagamot ko ang sarili ko,” Duterte said.

(I said, “Are you sure?” They said, “You ask any gay person who sees Trillanes move, they’ll say he’s gay.” No wonder. Good thing Trillanes and I are similar. But I cured myself.)

Duterte continued: “Noong kami na ni Zimmerman, sabi ko, ito na. Naging lalaki ako ulit. (When I began a relationship with Zimmerman, I said, this is it. I became a man again).”

Duterte then said he was “cured” after meeting the woman he refers to as his “mutya” and “one and only”, her current partner Honeylet Avanceña.

According to CNN, Duterte said, “I became a man again! So beautiful women cured me,” Duterte said. “I hated handsome men afterwards. I now prefer beautiful women.”

Duterte used to comment negatively about the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.  In 2017, when Duterte visited the Filipino community in Myanmar, he told them that he was against same-sex marriage, and that same sex marriage in the Philippines is not acceptable.

However, later that year, he said that he would protect the rights of the LGBT during his term.

Duterte concluded his speech by inviting four women on stage to kiss him. – LMI
