Saudi Arabia is one of the favorite countries where Filipinos would love to go for employment. Some say it is not too strict in recruitment and it also offers good pay. Many Filipinos aspiring for work overseas are deployed to Saudi every month. They are hopeful and positive that working in Saudi might be their chance to give their families back home a better life.
Some overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are already working in Saudi would say that they have nice job and they are satisfied with their salary and to add more bonus, they have found a good employer. But this accounts for only few OFWs in Saudi. Those who work as domestic helpers suffer the most. They suffer exploitation and physical abuse. And, almost every day, posts and shares from their friends flood the social media especially Facebook about stories of OFWs in Saudi being maltreated, physically abused, raped, locked in a room, not being fed, and not being paid.
Lately, another story was posted on Facebook and has gone viral. A photo of a certain Lovely Acosta Baruelo, an OFW in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, who was tied to a tree by her employer was posted and shared by many Facebook users. They were asking for help on her behalf.
The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh reported that the case of OFW Baruelo was brought to their attention on May 9. It was not clear what was the reason why Baruelo was tied to a tree by her employer. But whatever the reason was, it was inhuman tying someone to a tree.
Baruelo was repatriated on the same day. Initial reports say that she is from Bauang, La Union.
The DFA, through a statement sent by Assistant Secretary Emmanuel Fernaandez said, that OFW Lovely Acosta Baruelo from Saudi Arabia arrived in Manila at 8:55 p.m. on 9 May 2019.” – LMI
