OFW arrived home very ill and with bruises, died after weeks of hospitalization

The main reason why Filipinos want to work overseas away from families is the dream to give their children and family a better life.  Because of this, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are willing to sacrifice just to make this dream come true.

While working abroad, OFWs experience many hardships that they never imagined to happen to them.  Those who are working as domestic helpers especially in the Middle East like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Dubai are the most afflicted. They suffer physical abuse, harassment, rape and even death from their employers.

Just lately, another sad story was reported by Ronda Brigada about a Filipina who worked as a domestic helper in Saudi for two years and went home very ill and eventually died in the hospital where she was confined.

The OFW is Richelle Prado from Barangay Abubong, General Santos city. According to her family, Richelle wanted to work abroad because she wanted to give a better life to her two children and her family.  Her first year of work in Saudi was great as she related her story to her family.

However, few months before her contract ended in May, she complained of severe headache which she suffered from frequently as related by her father and her sister in an interview with them by Ronda Brigada.

She arrived in the Philippines on May 14 and had been hospitalized for many days since then.  She was taken to different hospitals in Manila but she was being rejected because the hospitals said that they did not have the facilities to treat her condition.  Then she was admitted by one hospital until she died.

Richelle’s remains were taken home in Abubong, GenSan on May 28. Her medical records showed that she had hydrocephalus, meningitis, and pneumonia, which may have been the reason for her death.

Her family, however, suspects that there may have been foul play in Richelle’s death as bruises were discovered in her body.  They are now seeking the help of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and other concerned government agencies to have autopsy on Richelle to know the exact cause of her death and to conduct further investigation on what really happened to her in Saudi before she went home. – LMI
