Are you familiar with a nipa hut?
You might have encountered a book or two of a drawing of a nipa hut complete with a sun between the mountains, a carabao, and a rice field.
This small house represents the simple house of people during the early years. It’s an icon and a tradition in the Philippines.
But is it cheap to own or to construct a nipa hut?

What It Is Made Of?
An typical hut or bahay kubo is made of:
- Coco lumber and bamboo for the joint and beams
- Nipa shingles for the windows and roof
- Bamboo slats for the floors and railings
- Sawali framed with bamboo slats for the walls
What sets a bahay kubo apart from other houses is that the construction allows you to disable, move, and reassemble the pieces quickly and easily. It makes a great rustic cabana.
You can place it outside and use as a lanai, a terrace piece, and even a resting area!

Accessorize Your Nipa Hut
A bahay kubo does not mean you should just place it as is in your backyard.
If you’re planning to use it as a resting area, why don’t you start accessorizing it?
Here are just a few of the ideas you can have to recreate your own cabana:
- Place some cushion and throw pillow.
- Add some white or sheer curtains.
- Place a mattress and some curtains and use the nipa hut as your resting area. You’ll definitely sleep for hours here.

A nipa hut is a very simple yet inviting and warm place for the family to just relax and enjoy the rest of the day after a very busy work day.
