When the news about the lifeless body of an Overseas Filipino Worker was found in a freezer, it shocked, devastated, and angered a lot of people not only in the Philippines but all over the world. It also sparked and put a definite mark on the employment ban of sending OFWs to work in Kuwait.
Although the suspect was named already, the government of Dubai and the Philippines, together with the Interpol, is still looking for the OFW’s former Lebanese employer and his Syrian wife. Up to now, there is still no justice for the death of the poor OFW.
After an intensive autopsy of the OFW’s body, Joanna Demafelis, the domestic helper found in the freezer, the result is finally out. According to the Philippine Ambassador to Kuwait, Renato Pedro Villa, the OFW died due to the severe beating she suffered at the hands of her employer.
Ambassador Villa also said that based on the autopsy report, Demafelis died with several broken ribs and contusion. There are also trauma signs found in the pelvis and kidney areas. The OFW also suffered from internal bleeding.
There were also several wounds found on the body.
Going Back to Her Family
The OFW’s body is expected to be repatriated to her family in the Philippines this Friday, February 16.
The autopsy also showed that Demafelis was already dead when she was put in the freezer on November 16. Her last communication with her family in the Philippines was in September 2016.
Sinabi rin niya na ‘yung beating sa kanya (Demafelis) o pagmaltrato ay hindi nangyari sa isang beses lang kundi, kumbaga, madalas siyang binubugbog.
Ambassador Villa also said that the employers hid the body in the freezer before fleeing the apartment to hide any evidence. The employers even reported that Demafelis escaped last November 6, 2016.
Kasi ang nangyari pala ganito. Ang employer, ‘di ba umalis sila, sumibat sila ng Kuwait? Bago sila umalis gusto nilang pagtakpan ‘yung kanilang ginawa.
