There are an estimated 2.2 million Filipinos leaving the country to work abroad as Overseas Filipino Workers. Most people are becoming OFWs to earn a higher pay, to fulfill their lifelong dream, to get new experiences, and to secure the family’s future.

If you are getting ready to work abroad, it is important to be prepared and ready for the challenges that you might face. Here is an essential to-do list of the things you should know before you leave the Philippines.

Arrange All Your Paperwork

Make sure that all your needed travel and work documents are in order. These things include your passport and identification card, training certificate, work permit, and other paper works. Have all the necessary paperwork with you to reduce the hassle of any unexpected problems.

Pack Smart

Although it is tempting to bring a lot of belongings to save money on shopping expenses, make sure to prioritize appropriate clothing and basic essentials first. Avoid paying extra charges for luggage allowance.

Reserve Some Funds

Before you leave, research the cost of living in the country that you will be staying in. Your first salary may only come after a month of working so reserve at least two to three months worth of money for expenses and emergencies.

Learn Their Culture

Read and learn more about the culture of your destination as most countries are different from the Philippines. Keep the cultural norms in mind and memorize basic phrases to make interacting with locals easier.

There are plenty of reasons why OFWs are choosing to leave their families in the Philippines to search more chances abroad. Most of them want to provide a better future for themselves and their families that is why they are choosing to leave everything behind.
