Although there are a lot of stories about Overseas Filipino Workers having a hard time in another country because of physical and mental abuse, it is good to know that a lot of our fellow Kababayans are also reaping the crops of the seeds they grow.
One of these people is Johnny Gatus, a former OFW from San Rafael Bulacan.
Successful Agribusiness
Gatus grew up in a family of farmers. He did not pursue a business connected to farming before since he had a chance to work in Saudi Arabia for five years.
When he came back to the country, he started concentrating on building a farming business since someone offered to lend his farm to him for a fee. He is now a successful agribusinessman who is operating for ten years already. Most of his crops are vegetables.
Ang gulay kasi, kumpara sa palay, mas malakas sya pagkakitaan. Halos times 4 o nagtitimes 5 pa kung minsan yung neto ng inaani sa gulay kampara sa palay o mais.
How He Started
According to Gatus, he started in easy to grow crops like tomatoes, okra, and beans until he learned to grow bitter ground, child, and papaya.
He also mentioned that when he was working abroad, the pay was good. However, when he started working as an agribusinessman, the amount he is earning is better.
Although it is hard at first, he learned a lot through continuous learning, attending seminars, and asking the help of experienced businessmen and technicians.
After finding success in his farming business, Gatus also helped other farmers who cannot cultivate their own land. He gave them jobs on his farm.
He also revealed that he doesn’t have any intentions of going back as an OFW since he is already contented with the success he’s getting from his business.
